As many of you know, my husband and I have made the executive decision to pick up our family sometime this year and start a new life in a new town. Which we took a visit on up to this weekend to visit with a big thanks to our friends Daniel and Claire. But what you may not know is that it is going to be a super small town - I'm talking 3,000 population small. And although it may not seem ideal to most, it is the perfect dream for us. Here's why...
Cost of Living
I think that this is a pretty obvious one. Because let's be honest, living in larger cities is getting down-right ridiculous in prices. And for what would be a property with not quite enough room inside and outside here in Reno is going for, we could get our dream house of perfect size and acreage in a small town.
Transportation
Traffic in Reno doesn't bother us too much, but living in a small town does make transportation more appealing. Because everything is within 15 minutes of each other and traffic is pretty much nonexistent. My husband will no longer have to commute an hour to his job and I won't have to spend two hours bouncing from store to store because they're set 15 minute drives apart from each other. Instead we'll be given some extra time to sleep or do whatever the hell else we want to do because were given the opportunity to.
Space
This is the biggest reason for my husband, and one that I fancy too. With living in a smaller town, we'll be able to have the opportunity to get a bit more space for ourselves and our family as a whole. My husband will finally be able to build the shop of his dreams on our property. I could take up planting the perfect garden. My kids could have the perfect set up for all of their outside play. The dogs would be able to run around wherever they please. And we would all be able to enjoy investing in some more animals, such as horses. Then, we'll still have some more room to dream. That will show us the true meaning of silence (other than our kids buzzing around us) and the beauty of nature all around us. All of it coming together to offer unparalleled clarity for what were trying to work towards. Because everything just slows down to where you can take life all in.
Lifestyle
Now, this one is my biggest reason. The thing that has always appealed to me the most about living in a smaller town is the amazing lifestyle. Simply put, you get the best of both worlds there. You get to be away from the hustle of the city and every night get some good relaxation. The perfect place from an introvert like me. And if I do start to miss the business of the city, I can always take a short trip back to Reno to see our families.
And although small towns aren't typically culturally varied, they do have a ton of diversity in other forms. Such as animals, plant life, social characterizations, and strong sense of community. I've also heard and experienced first hand this weekend that relationships with the people in your life just hit different in small towns. Because time with the people that you care about is just so much more meaningful, but also forces you to rethink who you choose to be around. Mostly due to having to spend more quality time with the people in your life since there aren't too many activities to do. I mean we met some really amazing people in just two short days that blow a lot of people I know out of the water.
More Home Cooking
In a small town, dining options are significantly limited. The only fast food that this one has is a Subway. So I can't wait to be kind of forced to learn new recipes, grocery shop, and get creative in the kitchen to provide my family with a variety of food. I think that it will be an amazing and fun learning opportunity. Plus, I can't wait to add more flavor into my super picky husband's taste buds.
