Even more than ever now, I believe in the complete awe and wonder of everything that Christmas stands for. If you stop to think about it, it’ll blow you away. Between the religiousness that made the day, the time spent with our loved ones, and being able to celebrate after another year spent of working (whether at home or at a job), it really is the most wonderful time of the year.
Christmas Eve
Also known as “Noche Buena“ is the day that we celebrate with my husband‘s family. We take part in the very last day of the posada (days of praying that celebrate the part of the Christmas story where Joseph and Mary are looking for shelter). During it, the family prays, bathes Jesus, rocks him, sings, and then partakes in a Christmas dinner of tamales with Ponche (a warm punch with fruit). And at midnight, the kids get to open all of their Christmas presents. Since our kids celebrate on both days, they only open presents from everyone else during this time.
Christmas Day
Now, we spend Christmas the way that I grew up. The kids woke up in their Christmas pajamas. My mom, mother-in-law, brother, and grandparents-in-law came over. We had breakfast (left over tamales) while the kids opened presents. And then lounged around in pajamas watching Christmas movies until that night. Around 5pm we went to my mom‘s house for some dinner and played a little Uno.
This year was definitely something to remember. It’s the first time I felt genuinely happy through and through since being a kid. There is just something that is so amazing about watching you kids grow every year, enjoy the time with their family, and see the smiles on their faces. This year was perfect. In every way.
