The decisions that we make during our pregnancy journey are much much more than just picking out the color of the nursery.
Health Care Provider
As soon as that test pops up positive, it's the first choice - who to work with throughout your pregnancy. Whether it be a OB/GYN or midwife, it's important to do some research on which person will better be fit to help facilitate the experience you want to have. And that doesn't always mean staying with your established provider. No matter how nice or how many years you've worked with them, each person practices differently when it comes to catering to your pregnancy journey.
Where to Give Birth
Imagine where you picture your perfect way to bring your child into the world. A hospital, birthing center, or even at home. Whatever it may be, do some more research. Ask others about their birthing stories, get some recommendations, read some books, explore every option, and visit the places. Also keep in mind the coverage that your insurance will provide.
Finding Out the Gender
Everyone has a different opinion on finding out the gender of their babies, and different ways in doing so. Finding out can help with name picking, decorating of the nursery, buying of clothes, and of course let's you have a gender reveal! While keeping it a surprise can be so exciting and lead to motivation in the labor process.
Maternity Leave
Tell your place of employment as early as safely possible (usually at the 12 week mark). Giving them proper time will help them prepare for your absence ahead of time. Then look into what you need to do to take that leave. Is there a whole paperwork and approval process? What hours do you use to leave? How much time will you actually get off? And then set some plans for after the leave because sometimes plans can change due to emotionally and physical needs or wants of the family or baby. This may mean deciding to not return to work afterwards, childcare options, and what your job mixed with home life will look like.
Picking Out Names
This can be one of the most exciting processes of the whole thing, but dang is it hard. We have to not only think of cute names, but also if it will fit the baby's physical appearance, how it may affect them in life, and much much more.
Picking Who to Have in the Delivery Room
This is an important decision in the labor and delivery process. Who you have in the room can be the difference between a stressful delivery and a relaxed one. You'll want to pick people who make you feel calm, comfortable, and supported. And know that it is YOUR decision! But still check in with the hospital if that's where you decide to give birth. Because most have policies on the amount, most being up to three people.
Epidural
Think and do all of the research. You may find yourself completely set on one side, but it may change. In any case, learn the pros and cons, benefits and risks of every procedure and medication involved. And know that NOTHING is set in stone. Although being educated and having an idea of what you want will go a long way in your labor and delivery experience.
Breastfeed Vs. Bottlefeed
We are all aware that breastfeeding is the healthiest option to providing nutrition to our babies. But it's not always practical. With it comes many barriers and challenges. The choice again is YOURS! Well sometimes, it may be your body's choice depending on your production as well.
Circumcision
If having a boy, you'll definitely want to make this decision ahead of time. Mostly because it needs to be performed within 24 hours of birth. Most people decide based on family beliefs, religious beliefs, or social influence. But know that if you don't, it is okay! AS long as you maintain the cleanliness that goes along with keeping the hood.
Pediatrician
Not a lot of people realize that picking a pediatrician happens during pregnancy. Pretty early on too. You'll want to choose beforehand or else the hospital may assign one to you. Ask other mamas for references, do some research, and interview some doctors. It's an important process in finding someone who will cater to the benefit of your child and your beliefs in raise them.
