Milk Baths for Baby

Many moms aren’t aware of the benefits of breastmilk outside of just simply feeding. From creating teething popsicles to healing eczema, breastmilk seems to be able to do it all! I mean, they don’t call it liquid gold for just any reason. But one of the best uses for it is a milk bath.

Why Do a Breastmilk Bath?

Giving your baby a breastmilk bath may sound kind of strange. And I know that it can be hard to use up that precious stash of milk...we work damn hard for it. But let me just tell you, it’s worth it!

Moisturizes the skin. The oleic acid, palmitic acid, and linolenic acid act as a barrier to lock in the moisture. Which in turn prevents dryness.

Protects against pathogens. The several antibodies and strong anti-infective properties help ward off any germs to get to cuts and bruises. Due to the oleic acid eliminating the bacteria.

Reduce and repair skin damage. The omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in breastmilk mitigates the damage to the skin. Bringing down the inflammatory response which can heal small wounds and provide relief.

Probably my most favorite usage of it was for my daughter’s cradle cap and eczema. I used the creams and I would lotion her up, but I had a hard time with her super dry skin until I started giving her milk baths. In just a few days, they were both gone. This is due to the vaccenic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic acid, and oleic acid found within it. They all work together to moisturize and nourish the skin. You really can’t beat it! It can also help heal acne, bug bites, and baby acne.

How to Make It

Giving your baby a milk bath is as easy as it sounds! And just a few ounces will do. But of course the more is merrier. The important thing is to just make it to the point that it is enough to make the water look cloudy and milky. I usually add between 6-12 ounces, but I have used as little as 2 ounces before. - Run the bath as normal. - Completely wash the baby with soap. - Rinse the baby clean.

- Add enough milk for the cloudy look. - Mix the milk with the water by gently swishing it around. - Let the baby relax or play for at least a few minutes. - Before taking the out, pour the water/milk mixture over the baby’s body. Make sure to pay attention to any irritated or problem areas. - Take the baby out and pat dry. You don’t want to rinse them that way the milk can really saturate the skin and effectively do it’s job.
