Hey y'all and happy Saturday! So...one of my biggest goals of this year was to become more intentional with my time - alone, with my kids, with husband, and with my family as a whole. And a big part of that was to start up preschool for my three-year-old. Time to explore and learn together structurally.
And yes, I know that there is a TON of learning that is being done in his day-to-day routine through play and interaction. But I also want to enhance that learning by creating a special one-on-one time with him that provides a variety of skills and concepts.
And yes, I did try to start this MONTHS ago, but it just wasn't the right timing with everything going on in our personal life. But now, I am ready to dive completely into it after spending time figuring out where were going with our life, researching, and talking with family/friends. And I hope you all follow along!
What to Expect
Themes. Each week will be centered around a different theme. I will be walking through the alphabet, so each week will have a theme based on a letter (Ex: A is for Apples, B is for Bugs, etc.). The only time that the alphabet will be broken up is for certain occasions, such as holidays or changes of season.
5 main focal points for each day. To make the most of my toddler’s short attention span, I split our hour of learning into 5 main focal points made to last about 5-15 minutes each: A book to read, fine motor activity, gross motor activity, food/snack, sensory bin, and other (for any extra activity that we can squeeze into the theme IF we have the time and attention). All of it dependent upon his interest in what we’re doing.
Each activity is centered around certain objectives/goals for learning. My first step was to take time noticing what my son did throughout the day so that I could get a better idea of what we needed to work on. Noticing that I talked way more about the alphabet and colors than shapes, actual letters, and the meaning behind certain things.
Most activities require basic supplies, so you won't have to break the bank. As a SAHM, I try not to do a lot on a budget. Trying not to spend too much money as a one income household. So a lot of the activities in our schooling can be made, I got at the dollar store, could be used multiple times, or we’re bought for cheap on Amazon. I will also be adding in printable sheets that you can easily print off, cut out, and enjoy with each theme.
Letting them be little! If there is anything that I’ve learned in motherhood, it’s that as mothers we need to be flexible. Everything that I picture or plan WILL go differently, and I acknowledge that it is totally OKAY. Because let’s face it, Toddlers NEVER really adhere to an agenda. The important thing is to remember that this whole preschool thing is all about quality time, play, experience, exploration, and learning along with my children. So it’s always good to just go to the flow.
